Contact Dr Saghar Andaryani

Background

She is a dedicated researcher with extensive expertise in hydrology, remote sensing, climate change modeling, land use classification, and machine learning applications in environmental studies. With a strong interdisciplinary background in hydrology, remote sensing (optical, thermal, RADAR, and LiDAR), climatology, GIS, and geohazards, she is committed to addressing global challenges related to water resources and environmental sustainability. Her work is distinguished by innovation, rigorous data analysis, and a focus on delivering impactful, solution-driven research.

- Climate change

- Land use change

- Water resources management

- Hydrology

- Machine learning

Current activities

Her work combines hydrological modelling, GIS and remote sensing to support decisions about lowland agricultural peatlands. She investigates where raising water tables can reduce greenhouse gas emissions within practical land and water management constraints. Her research informs peatland restoration planning in support of the UK’s carbon budgets and net zero ambitions.

Her projects and professional activities include:

- LP3: Modelling water-table dynamics, drainage management and greenhouse-gas implications in agricultural peatlands.

- LAPWDP+: Co-Principal Investigator assessing water requirements for peatlands in the Yare, Waveney and Thurne catchments.

- FibreBroads: Served as Principal Investigator, leading spatial opportunity mapping for paludiculture and wetter land management.

- Defra water-table monitoring project: Preparing to lead as Principal Investigator, using satellite observations and machine learning to estimate seasonal water-table depth.

- Teaching and supervision: Experience teaching hydrology, remote sensing and GIS, and co-supervising one PhD researcher and three MSc students.
