Background
David Crouch is a specialist in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) science with more than 30 years of professional experience across remediation technologies, extreme hazard operations, and international CBRN capability development. His career spans academic, industrial and operational domains, delivering CBRN education, training and technical support to multiple international partners, including the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), NATO, DSTO and Interpol amongst others.
David holds Fellowships with seven leading international resilience, leadership, education and scientific organisations e.g. SFHEA FSRP FEPS F.ISRM FCMI FICPEM FRSC. A chartered chemist (CChem), Scientist (CSci) and Manager (CMgr), he is the former Chair of CBRN‑UK (2016–2019), the UK’s specialist CBRN industry group, and currently serves as a member of the ADS Security Sector Council and ADS Council. A member of the Emergency Planning Society CBRN Professional Working Group and Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). David has also served as International Director and Chair of the European Section at the International Society for Respiratory Protection (ISRP)
Prior to his academic leadership roles, David served as the global subject matter expert for Defence and Public Safety at 3M, and previously as Associate Director of Product Management (Military and Civil Defence) at Scott Safety / Tyco. His industry experience includes guiding international standards development (ISO TC94 SC15 WG23/6/7/23; CEN JTC23; TC391 WG2; BSI PH/4 and PH/23), shaping product strategy and innovation pipelines, and supporting the operational deployment of high‑reliability protective technologies.
David holds degrees in Applied Chemistry (BSc Hons), Business Administration (MBA), Strategic Defence Studies (MA), and a PhD in Materials Science. He has co‑authored 55 peer‑reviewed publications and is an inventor on eight patents. His core competencies include technical leadership, CBRN hazard management, strategic planning, capability development, crisis‑driven innovation, international standards governance, and the translation of end‑user needs into resilient, mission‑ready solutions.

Current activities
Currently, David is head of the CBRN & Survivability group, and Director of the CBRN Professional Education Programme at Cranfield Defence and Security driving strategic initiatives in CBRN and nuclear security education, research, and policy engagement. His work in this area supports international efforts to enhance CBRN and nuclear security capabilities and resilience. He is also dedicated to directing the delivery of the UK MOD Counter-CBRN Professional Education Programme (PEP), a defence-oriented initiative that enhances preparedness and response to CBRN incidents. His role encompasses the design, development, and delivery of short courses, case studies, workshops, and symposia, particularly in collaboration with organisations such as NATO, WHO, UN, Dstl, the UK Home Office, and DEFRA. These partnerships ensure comprehensive support before, during, and after CBRN incidents.
David is also technical director at defence, security & resilience consultants; United CBRN Limited and a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Hertforshire, supporting joint CBRN research programmes with Cranfield.
As a member of the Emergency Planning Society - CBRN Professional Working Group, and Principal Expert at BSI, supporting the national PH/004 (Respiratory Protection) & CBRN (BS8468) standards committees, as well as the international CEN Technical Committee 391 - WG 2 (CBRNe), and ISO TC94 SC15 WG4, 6 and 7 (CBRN) committees. David strongly supports international societal & citizen security and safety stakeholders to help ensure preparedness, cooperation, and a culture of security.Supporting ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥'s Forensic Institute, a large part of David's activities are creating bespoke short courses for Defence and Security clients.
